I got out of bed with dog barking on the brain this morning. I’m guessing that this is because I spent the entire night listening to my neighbor’s crazy dogs barking at coyotes all night long. I had all night long to think about the many nearby dogs that suffered from a variety of barking issues. It became apparent that my normally peaceful neighborhood,  has more than its share of occasional dog barking madness.

I have written a short list of just some of the commonest reasons that cause dogs to bark in excess . If your dog presents you with any of these types of barking problems, you will need to work with your dog to correct the problem. Unfortunately, the problem of your dog’s excessive barking will not just go away all by itself.

  • One very common reason that a dog will start barking is when it sees another dog or a stranger somewhere within its visual range. This behavior is easy to understand, because it is very natural for a dog to want to protect its family and territory from others. This becomes problem barking  when a dog just won’t stop the barking even after it has made its point. He gets a form of positive reinforcement when the other dog or human has moved away because in his mind he has scared the dog or person away.
  • Many times the problems start when dogs start having a long-distance conversation with other neighborhood dogs that just goes on way too long.  You can train your dog to stop doing this if he is one of those talkative dogs. Excessive dog barking  is a problem you should not ignore, especially since all that unnecessary barking is annoying for you (and your neighbors, too).
  • Stressed out and insecure dogs are likely to bark for insignificant reasons. These types of dogs have a lot of nervous anxiety issue,a dog will bark for no obvious reason whatsoever. Unless they are with their masters, this kind of dog barking problem can happen throughout the day or night. My good friend’s dog was such a nervous Nellie that it would bark if a leaf fell down form a nearby tree. Now that was a very nervous dog. It doesn’t take a big leap of imagination to realize that this dog barked all the time-for nothing.
  • A dog that is really lonely and bored may just start barking out of frustration-he wants to tell the whole world all about it.  Dogs that are left all alone most of the time without attention and interaction are the obvious candidates for this barking problem.
  • Some dogs will bark at their masters (I know this from first hand experience) continually until they get their way-ignoring whether or not you are busy doing something else. If the dog respected its master as the Alpha dog, he would not be trying that. the problem with letting this happen, is that in your dog’s mind he is training you-not the other way around. I have been through this with my Lab-she liked  to bark at me when she was bored and wanted to play-she was trying to train me, and did a  good job of it too-until I learned better and stopped responding.
